Words Indicating Fuel in Vietnamese in Contrast toEnglish

Abstract

According to Eastern philosophy and the Vietnamese’s perspectives, “fire”isattributedto oneofthe five elemental energies(metal,wood,water,fire,earth)encompassing all the myriad phenomena ofthe universe. Fire, however,differs fromother natural phenomenainitsinherent characteristics,and it cannot beisolated fromthe others. To obtaina deepinsight intothe arbitrarily-lingual diversityin nominatingnatural things in various languages, a statistic survey was conducted onwords indicating fuels causing firein Vietnamese and English. Therefore, the main purpose of this research is tofocus onthesemantic fieldof fire undertheVietnamese’s linguistic perspectiveson nominating things indicating fuel.
